The Importance of Being Fancy is a children’s picture book which follows a gender ambiguous narrator through a validating story of empowerment to be who you are unapologetically. The narrator encourages readers to express themselves in a way that feels authentically fancy; whether it be wearing socks on the outside of your pants, using big words, decorating your wheels or other expressions. In writing and illustrating this book, I aim to help all children confidently explore and express their individuality. Themes of self-love, self-expression, change, community and inclusivity are discussed throughout the book. The book includes a brainstorming space, as well as a resource page and an author’s note. I wrote and illustrated this book. Copyright Frankie Martin.
This making of this book was inspired by my own child, Forest, who expresses himself to the tune of his very own unique beat. Besides wanting to be the fastest, brightest, and funniest… he has always had an appreciation for beauty and an interest in being the fanciest. I wanted to write a book in which kids like him could see themselves. There is so much more to being fancy than just sparkles and gowns, although those are pretty nice too. ;)
